The 2017 British Knockout Championship is an 8-player knockout taking place alongside the London Chess Classic in the Hilton London Olympia and Olympia Conference Centre from 1-9 December.
The defending champion Nigel Short and David Howell are among the players fighting for a £20,000 first prize, with £10,000 for the runner-up, £5,000 for losing semi-finalists and £2,500 for losing quarter-finalists.
Time control: The quarter-finals and semi-finals are 2-game matches with 90 minutes for all moves and a 30-second increment from move one. If the matches are tied two 10+2 blitz games are played, then an Armageddon game, where White has 6 minutes to Black's 4 with a 2-second increment per move from move 61 but a draw counts as a win for Black. The final consists of 8 games, 4 classical games with 90 minutes for 40 moves, then 30 minutes to the end of the game and a 30-second increment and 4 rapid games (15min + 10sec). Classical games count double. Tiebreaks, if required, are the same as before.
