Round 4

Anand, Viswanathan - Vallejo Pons, Francisco (1-0) Queen Gambit accepted is coming as a pleasant surprise for me. Paco was experimenting recently with Dutch but his last game against Topalov in Tromso was rather disappointing. Wojtasek is one of the greatest experts in this opening. His preference is 3. e4, so Anand's reaction was more than predictable, but the next move already is a rare guest in Top level chess, although in my opinion it is quite playable... See more

Ponomariov, Ruslan - Aronian, Levon (½-½) 1. d4 Nf6 2. c4 e6 3. g3 This move order is to prevent the queen Indian Defence - Aronian's main weapon against 1.d4... See more

Round 2

Aronian, Levon - Ponomariov, Ruslan (1-0) Ponomariov wanted to avoid 3.f3 system Anti Grunfeld which Anand used as his main weapon in his WCC match against Gelfand. I thought he had enough KID torturing yesterday, but I was surprised to see that he wanted to repeat it all again... See more

Vallejo Pons, Francisco - Anand, Viswanathan (0-1) Paco makes his final mistake. (Of course not 26. Ke2 Ne4) (but after 26. f3 I don't see how black will win the endgame 26... f6 27. Ke2 a6 28. Rd2)... See more

Round 1

Anand, Viswanathan - Ponomariov, Ruslan (1-0) The courage of Ponomariov to play KID at such level wasn't rewarded. Anand won a game in a typical positional style without giving any counterchances... See more

Vallejo Pons, Francisco - Aronian, Levon (½-½) In this game from the first round Paco decided to challenge Aronian with the sharp system in Nimzo-Indian defence with 4. Nf3 and 5. Bg5. Aronian'a experience in that line was much higher - considering that he used to play like that with white pieces not so long ago... See more

GM Fabiano Caruana won the 2nd Sinquefield Cup after 7 wins in a row and 3 draws in the final rounds, finishing with 8.5/10 points.

Sinquefield Cup events are not over yet. Ultimate Moves will take place today, 8th September, at 2pm local time. Ultimate Moves will feature eight two-man teams made up of a GM and an amateur player each. The teams will compete in a double-round knockout bracket, with teammates alternating moves in games with a time control of 15 minutes and 2-second increments.

On Tuesday, 9th September, there will be an exhibition titled "Ultimate Showdown," a six-game friendly between GMs Levon Aronian and Hikaru Nakamura playing the popular chess variant of Chess960. Both players are former World Champions to the variant, also known as FischerRandom Chess, and will play the exhibition games on iconic furniture used by Fischer and his childhood mentor Jack Collins. The furniture is currently on display at the World Chess Hall of Fame, as part of a presentation titled A Memorable Life: A Glimpse into the Complex Mind of Bobby Fischer.

Game of the day: Caruana-Carlsen at Sinquefield Cup 2014

Sinquefield Cup 2014

Today GM Alexander Delchev provides live commentary on the game of the day at Sinquefield Cup 2014 between Caruana with the record-breaking score of 7/7 and the World's number 1 Carlsen!

Follow live at ChessBomb with computer analysis: Caruana-Carlsen

GM Alexander Delchev:

Unbelievable! There is no other word to describe what is happening. No more records to beat for Caruana. Noone has ever done this before - seven wins in a row against the best chess players in the world. Today is Carlsen's turn... to put the end of this threatening score, to withstand the reputation of the whole chess world.

In the last game between them from the Tromso Olympiad Carlsen chose the highly suspicious opening - Scandinavian, where he gave his bishop pair to be able to build a bullet proof c6 and e6/d4 c4 pawn structure. Then somehow in the endgame he overplayed Caruana in his typical style.
